Influencer Audrey Peters sparked a major discourse within the TikTok fashion community after her comments on the work of fashion designer Demna Gvasalia, who has bridged street style with high fashion.
Peters reduced his work to “normalizing wearing sweatshirts” and called it laziness. Creators like Marlee Loiben responded to Peters’ comments, saying that streetwear is not just about $900 hoodies, but a cultural phenomenon that originated as a form of creative expression for outcasts. Streetwear is community-based, originating from hip-hop scenes in New York, surf-skate and graffiti culture in Los Angeles, and the nightlife of Japan. Dapper Dan, the hip-hop fashion legend, was the first to remix designer items and reinvent their iconography in his Harlem shop, providing access to luxury fashion for the surrounding community.
