France is revolutionising fashion industry with climate-impact labels

It is difficult to track the real sustainability rating of fabric just by looking at it. To remedy this, France has decided to have a label detailing climate impact on every piece of clothing by next year. EU would follow suit with a complete adaption by 2026. 11 proposals are being considered by The French Agency for Ecological Transition (Ademe) on how to collect data and what would be the look of the resulting label using 500 garments. The coordinators propose that brands should make these details traceable for their ease as labels would enable brands to become more transparent and informed. The UN statistics show how the industry is responsible for 10% of carbon emissions and a sufficient volume of water consumption. A Paris-based textiles conference, Premiere Vision, has highlighted some new ways of becoming sustainable including non-toxic leather tanning, dyes drawn from fruits and waste, biodegradable underwear, and using the right fabric for the right garment. The testing phase would yield results by next spring.
