Gen Z celebrates Dupe culture all over TikTok

Recently, during New York Fashion Week, Mirror Palais, founded by Marcelo Gaia, was thrust under the spotlight for its design. On TikTok, Gaia’s design is a staple of Dupe culture. Dupe, a term that stands for duplicate, is sweeping the internet fashion industry. Its Mirror Palais Leite dress, a simple off-white linen dress, is all over the internet with many influencers donning and flaunting it. Social media’s influence on fast-fashion firms has fundamentally altered how younger generations view the consumption of apparel. The clothing in low-cost stores and budget collections were initially inspired by these firms’ frequent targeting of major fashion houses like Chanel, Prada, and Coach, leveraging designer runway displays and public reactions. Currently, TikTok trends such as cottage core and indie sleaze are promoted with popular designer dresses that are quite identifiable. When an item goes viral, low-cost products that look exactly like the original item are recreated.
